When Deb Tyson was recruited to play basketball at Louisburg College in 1974, she had no idea she would also play volleyball. Her head coach, Terry Pettit, had no idea he would coach women’s volleyball at the same school, a small junior college in North Carolina. That coincidence changed their professional journeys. Pettit became the head women’s volleyball coach at Nebraska, and Deb Tyson became the head volleyball coach at a junior college in Columbus, Nebraska, James Madison University, the University of Virginia, and a decorated high school athletics director in Charlottesville. This is a conversation about her remarkable journey.

Wow! To see you interview Debbie Tyson was awesome! I was lucky enough to play for her at Platte College her first two years. My last year there, I was trying to find a college that would give me a chance to play volleyball, basketball or softball. I believe she set up the auditions at Nebraska through you. It was a great experience and made the softball team. I feel she helped me greatly to get to the next level.
GREAT INTERVIEW! Deb Tyson was a Great Volleyball Coach and Mentor (Platte College) to me personally for 2 years! So proud and honored to have had her in my educational years. Thanks for the pod cast and so good to hear her story!
